On 25 June 2020, our Cities-4-People Team in Budapest organised an official opening ceremony for the Mobility Point network at Magyar tudósok körútja. Because of the risks related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was only targeted to representatives from the press this time. A bigger event for citizens will be organised in autumn.
Over the 3 years of the Cities-4-People project, sustainable shared mobility has been the main focus of the co-creation activities in Budapest. Setting up the Mobility point network, our local team, in collaboration with local authorities and the citizens, aimed at promoting a change of transport mode, from public transport to shared services, thus favouring environmentally friendly, low-emission transport modes in the city.
The Mobility Point network has now been in operation since March 2020. However, due to the lockdown, the official opening ceremony could not take place in the first months. With the gradual reopening of all activities, it was finally the time to officially kick off the Mobility points.
The ceremony opened with three keynote speakers and started with an introduction about the Cities-4-People Project and the goals of the Mobility point network. Mr. David Dorosz (Deputy Mayor of Climate Protection and Development) highlighted how solutions such as the mobility point can improve people’s transportation and quality of life, helping reduce the overall number of cars in circulation. Next, Mr. Gábor Kerpel-Fronius (Deputy Mayor of Smart City and Public Involvement) talked about data driven mobility approaches and how the Cities-4-People project facilitates the dialogue between the city management and the citizens to plan according to the collected feedback and opinions. Finally, Mr. László Sándor Kerényi (Director of Strategy and Innovation at BKK Zrt.) explained how during the past 3 years of the Cities-4-People project, the project team along with the population has jointly collected solutions to the mobility challenges of the Danube river embankment in Buda. The experience of the project in Budapest has created a great opportunity to build partnerships with shared mobility service providers, which can be the basis for a long-term ongoing collaboration. The final goal of the Mobility point network for the Municipality of the City of Budapest and BKK is to create a transparent and dedicated location for shared micromobility services.
After the keynotes’ presentations, the press had the chance to ask questions to the mobility service providers. At the end, free test rides were offered to try out the different shared mobility services.
The event was very successful and the local project team members were satisfied and grateful for the good cooperation with the mobility service providers. The Mobility Points will be open for testing until October 2020. Locals and visitors in Budapest will have the opportunity to try out micromobility solutions at 4 different stations at district 11 and experience new ways of moving around the city.
